Food and lodging

Clinic is in Falmouth Jamaica, Trelawny Parish

On corner of George St and Newton St. 

1.

Volunteers will be staying either at the dorms adjacent to the clinic or at Silver Sands

Cell service exists, as does limited LG service.  You will need to contact your cell provider to set up international calling.

Volunteers at the Dorms will have all meals provided.  Those staying at Silver Sands will get breakfast and lunch provided.  Dinner will be arranged by you and the staff at Silver Sands.  Most will have a cook, but you need to make arrangements for groceries.  This means providing money or buying groceries yourself.  There are few restaurants in the area.  We will go to Scotchies for jerk chicken or pork one night.

All transport to and from Montego Bay international airport will be provided.  All transport to and from clinic will be provided.  Local taxis and car hire are available for other needs.

The local markets and shops do not have credit card capability.  We suggest you bring cash.  There are a few ATMs in Falmouth and banks to exchange currency.

Clinic Info

Clinic runs from 8 am to when the last patient is seen.  We will start Triage at 7:30-7:45 am.  There will be brief break for lunch.  Our patients will be waiting outside in the heat so we don't want to keep them waiting!

Clinic may be at the Falmouth clinic or at one of the satellite clinics such as Duanville, Beecher Town, or the local girls home.  Your flexibility is appreciated

Clinic dress is fairly casual.  Scrubs with or either shorts or pants are acceptable.  Shoes should be worn in lieu of sandals.

Although the Medical Mission is secular, we are guests of the local Methodist Church, so upstanding behavior is required at all times

We will have some didactic activities at night back at Silver Sands.

If you have any specialist equipment that you require, please ensure that you bring it with you.

Common conditions:

Diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, tinea infections, Vaginitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, malnutrition and pediatric concerns.

Skills to review:

Joint arthrocentesis, KoH prep and wet prep.

EKG lead placement, insulin administration, PIV placement

Travel insurance will be provided by Seven Corners and underwritten by Lloyds of London.

This provides coverage for accident, medical, and evacuation costs.

Has a $50 deductible 

followed by 10,000 in medical coverage.  Has $100,000 in evacuation coverage.

General info

Although the medical Mission is secular, we are guests of the local Methodist Church.  As such exemplary behavior is required at all times.  Failure to do so will mean removal from the trip and participant being responsible for their own arrangements.
